the stone door by leonora carrington
with boyfriend, the painter max ernst
leonora carrington was one of the last surviving surrealist painters. she died yesterday in mexico city at the age of 94. i read her book the hearing trumpet by chance and became very interested in her life after that. i love her paintings. they always remind me of how veiled life is. i’m not sure how else to explain it. they have a stillness, like in dreams, where something fantastic is happening and yet it feels real. sad to think she’s gone now.
my favorite photo of her. working on some masterpiece in her modest studio with a kitten in her lap.
